Earthing, Bonding & Clearance Guidelines for Revolvashade Umbrellas

This guide provides general information on electrical safety, earthing, and bonding for Revolvashade umbrellas in Australian pools and outdoor areas. Always consult a licensed electrician for site-specific assessment and compliance.

1. Distance from Swimming Pools and Spas

Under AS/NZS 3000 and pool safety regulations, special electrical “zones” apply around water. These zones are based on how close people in the pool can reasonably reach fixed metal objects such as umbrella poles, fencing and handrails. Any exposed conductive material larger than ~100 mm within this zone may need equipotential bonding.

Recommended Minimum Clearances for Umbrellas

AreaMinimum Distance
From pool edge (metal structures, e.g., umbrella)1.25 m recommended
From pool waterline (electrical equipment)2.0 m+

Guidance:

  • Avoid placing umbrellas within designated pool electrical zones where possible.
  • Under AS/NZS 3000, conductive items within 1.25 metres of the pool edge (“arm’s reach”) is likely to require equipotential bonding by a licensed electrician.
  • As a practical guideline, positioning umbrellas 1.5 m or more from the pool edge will generally place them outside the bonding zone, although a licensed electrician may still be required to confirm site conditions.

2. What is a Bonding Conductor?

A bonding conductor is a low-resistance wire that connects metal parts that do not normally carry electricity — such as pipes, structural steel, and equipment frames — to the main earthing point. This helps keep all metal components at the same electrical level, reducing the risk of electric shock and fire.

3. Bolt-Down Base Bonding

Licensed electricians typically bond a bolt-down umbrella base as follows:

  1. Secure a low-resistance copper bonding conductor from the umbrella frame to the property’s main earthing point.
  2. Connect the wire under the anchor bolts of the base plate.
  3. Test continuity to ensure all metal parts are at the same electrical potential.
  4. Provide certification confirming compliance with AS/NZS 3000.
